There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ ഞാൻ കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തിന്മ ഉണ്ടു; അതു മനുഷ്യർക്കു ഭാരമുള്ളതാകുന്നു.

A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.ദൈവം ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്നു ധനവും ഐശ്വര്യവും മാനവും നല്കുന്നു; അവൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതിന്നു ഒന്നിന്നും അവന്നു കുറവില്ല; എങ്കിലും അതു അനുഭവിപ്പാൻ ദൈവം അവന്നു അധികാരം കൊടുക്കുന്നില്ല; ഒരു അന്യനത്രേ അതു അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതു; അതു മായയും വല്ലാത്ത വ്യാധിയും തന്നേ.

If a man brought forth an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ നൂറുമക്കളെ ജനിപ്പിക്കയും ഏറിയ സംവത്സരം ജീവിച്ചു ദീർഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കയും ചെയ്തിട്ടും അവൻ നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചു തൃപ്തനാകാതെയും ഒരു ശവസംസ്ക്കാരം പ്രാപിക്കാതെയും പോയാൽ ഗർഭം അലസിപ്പോയ പിണ്ഡം അവനെക്കാൾ നന്നു എന്നു ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു.

For he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.അതു മായയിൽ വരുന്നു; അന്ധകാരത്തിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു; അതിന്റെ പേർ അന്ധകാരത്തിൽ മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.

Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this has more rest than the other.സൂര്യനെ അതു കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുമില്ല; മറ്റേവനെക്കാൾ അധികം വിശ്രാമം അതിന്നുണ്ടു.

Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet has he seen no good: do not all go to one place?അവൻ ഈരായിരത്താണ്ടു ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നിട്ടും നന്മ അനുഭവിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിൽ എല്ലാവരും ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കല്ലയോ പോകുന്നതു?

All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.മനുഷ്യന്റെ പ്രയത്നമൊക്കെയും അവന്റെ വായക്കുവേണ്ടിയാകുന്നു; എങ്കിലും അവന്റെ കൊതിക്കു മതിവരുന്നില്ല.

For what has the wise more than the fool? what has the poor, that knows to walk before the living?മൂഢനെക്കാൾ ജ്ഞാനിക്കു എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു? പരിജ്ഞാനമുള്ള സാധുവിന്നു ജീവനുള്ളവരുടെ മുമ്പിൽ നടക്കുന്നതിൽ എന്തു വിശേഷതയുള്ളു?

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.അഭിലാഷത്തിന്റെ സഞ്ചാരത്തെക്കാൾ കണ്ണിന്റെ നോട്ടം നല്ലതു; അതും മായയും വൃഥാപ്രയത്നവും അത്രേ.

That which has been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.ഒരുത്തൻ എന്തു തന്നേ ആയിരുന്നാലും അവന്നു പണ്ടേ തന്നേ പേർ വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു; മനുഷ്യൻ എന്താകും എന്നു വിധിച്ചുമിരിക്കുന്നു; തന്നിലും ബലമേറിയവനോടു വാദിപ്പാൻ അവന്നു കഴിവില്ല.

Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?മായയെ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വാക്കു പെരുക്കിയാലും മനുഷ്യന്നു എന്തു ലാഭം?

For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതകാലത്തു, അവൻ നിഴൽ പോലെ കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുന്ന വ്യർത്ഥമായുള്ള ആയുഷ്കാലത്തൊക്കെയും അവന്നു എന്താകുന്നു നല്ലതു എന്നു ആർക്കറിയാം? അവന്റെ ശേഷം സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ എന്തു സംഭവിക്കും എന്നു മനുഷ്യനോടു ആർ അറിയിക്കും?

Ecclesiastes 7

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.നല്ല പേർ സുഗന്ധതൈലത്തെക്കാളും മരണദിവസം ജനനദിവസത്തെക്കാളും ഉത്തമം.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.വിരുന്നുവീട്ടിൽ പോകുന്നതിനെക്കാൾ വിലാപഭവനത്തിൽ പോകുന്നതു നല്ലതു; അതല്ലോ സകലമനുഷ്യരുടെയും അവസാനം; ജീവച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവൻ അതു ഹൃദയത്തിൽ കരുതിക്കൊള്ളും.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.ചിരിയെക്കാൾ വ്യസനം നല്ലതു മുഖം വാടിയിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഹൃദയം സുഖമായിരിക്കും.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of delight.ജ്ഞാനികളുടെ ഹൃദയം വിലാപഭവനത്തിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നു; മൂഢന്മാരുടെ ഹൃദയമോ സന്തോഷഭവനത്തിലത്രേ.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.മൂഢന്റെ ഗീതം കേൾക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാൾ ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ശാസന കേൾക്കുന്നതു മനുഷ്യന്നു നല്ലതു.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.മൂഢന്റെ ചിരി കലത്തിന്റെ കീഴെ കത്തുന്ന മുള്ളിന്റെ പൊടുപൊടുപ്പുപോലെ ആകുന്നു; അതും മായ അത്രേ.

Surely oppression makes a wise man mad; and a gift destroys the heart.കോഴ ജ്ഞാനിയെ പൊട്ടനാക്കുന്നു; കൈക്കൂലി ഹൃദയത്തെ കെടുത്തുകളയുന്നു.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.ഒരു കാര്യത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തെക്കാൾ അതിന്റെ അവസാനം നല്ലതു; ഗർവ്വമാനസനെക്കാൾ ക്ഷമാമാനസൻ ശ്രേഷ്ഠൻ.

Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.നിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ അത്ര വേഗം നീരസം ഉണ്ടാകരുതു; മൂഢന്മാരുടെ മാർവ്വിൽ അല്ലോ നീരസം വസിക്കുന്നതു.

Say not you, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for you do not enquire wisely concerning this.പണ്ടത്തേ കാലം ഇപ്പോഴത്തേതിനെക്കാൾ നന്നായിരുന്നതിന്റെ കാരണം എന്തു എന്നു നീ ചോദിക്കരുതു; നീ അങ്ങനെ ചോദിക്കുന്നതു ജ്ഞാനമല്ലല്ലോ.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.ജ്ഞാനം ഒരു അവകാശംപോലെ നല്ലതു; സകലഭൂവാസികൾക്കും അതു ബഹുവിശേഷം.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom gives life to them that have it.ജ്ഞാനം ഒരു ശരണം, ദ്രവ്യവും ഒരു ശരണം; ജ്ഞാനമോ ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ജീവനെ പാലിക്കുന്നു; ഇതത്രേ പരിജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ വിശേഷത.

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked?ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ നോക്കുക; അവൻ വളെച്ചതിനെ നേരെയാക്കുവാൻ ആർക്കു കഴിയും?

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also has set the one opposite to the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.സുഖകാലത്തു സുഖമായിരിക്ക; അനർത്ഥകാലത്തോ ചിന്തിച്ചുകൊൾക; മനുഷ്യൻ തന്റെ ശേഷം വരുവാനുള്ളതൊന്നും ആരാഞ്ഞറിയാതെയിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ദൈവം രണ്ടിനെയും ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongs his life in his wickedness.ഞാൻ എന്റെ മായാകാലത്തു ഇതൊക്കെയും കണ്ടു: തന്റെ നീതിയിൽ നശിച്ചുപോകുന്ന നീതിമാൻ ഉണ്ടു; തന്റെ ദുഷ്ടതയിൽ ദിർഘായുസ്സായിരിക്കുന്ന ദുഷ്ടനും ഉണ്ടു.

Be not righteous over much; neither make yourself over wise: why should you destroy yourself ?അതിനീതിമാനായിരിക്കരുതു; അതിജ്ഞാനിയായിരിക്കയും അരുതു; നിന്നെ നീ എന്തിന്നു നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു?

Be not over much wicked, neither be you foolish: why should you die before your time?അതിദുഷ്ടനായിരിക്കരുതു; മൂഢനായിരിക്കയുമരുതു; കാലത്തിന്നു മുമ്പെ നീ എന്തിന്നു മരിക്കുന്നു?

It is good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not yours hand: for he that fears God shall come out of them all.നീ ഇതു പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാൽ കൊള്ളാം; അതിങ്കൽനിന്നു നിന്റെ കൈ വലിച്ചുകളയരുതു; ദൈവഭക്തൻ ഇവ എല്ലാറ്റിൽനിന്നും ഒഴിഞ്ഞുപോരും.

Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.ഒരു പട്ടണത്തിൽ പത്തു ബലശാലികൾ ഉള്ളതിനെക്കാൾ ജ്ഞാനം ജ്ഞാനിക്കു അധികം ബലം.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not.പാപം ചെയ്യാതെ നന്മ മാത്രം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു നീതിമാനും ഭൂമിയിൽ ഇല്ല.

²¹

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest you hear your servant curse you:പറഞ്ഞുകേൾക്കുന്ന സകലവാക്കിന്നും നീ ശ്രദ്ധകൊടുക്കരുതു; നിന്റെ ദാസൻ നിന്നെ ശപിക്കുന്നതു നീ കേൾക്കാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു തന്നേ.

For oftentimes also yours own heart knows that you yourself likewise have cursed others.നീയും പല പ്രാവശ്യ്‍വം മറ്റുള്ളവരെ ശപിച്ചപ്രകാരം നിനക്കു മനോബോധമുണ്ടല്ലോ.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.ഇതൊക്കെയും ഞാൻ ജ്ഞാനംകൊണ്ടു പരീക്ഷിച്ചുനോക്കി; ഞാൻ ജ്ഞാനം സമ്പാദിക്കുമെന്നു ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു; എന്നാൽ അതു എനിക്കു ദൂരമായിരുന്നു.

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?ഉള്ളതു ദൂരവും അത്യഗാധവും ആയിരിക്കുന്നു; അതു കണ്ടെത്തുവാൻ ആർക്കു കഴിയും?

²⁵

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:ഞാൻ തിരിഞ്ഞു, അറിവാനും പരിശോധിപ്പാനും ജ്ഞാനവും യുക്തിയും അന്വേഷിപ്പാനും ദുഷ്ടത ഭോഷത്വമെന്നും മൂഢത ഭ്രാന്തു എന്നും ഗ്രഹിപ്പാനും മനസ്സുവെച്ചു.

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.മരണത്തെക്കാൾ കൈപ്പായിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം ഞാൻ കണ്ടു: ഹൃദയത്തിൽ കണികളും വലകളും കയ്യിൽ പാശങ്ങളും ഉള്ള സ്ത്രീയെ തന്നേ; ദൈവത്തിന്നു പ്രസാദമുള്ളവൻ അവളെ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു രക്ഷപ്പെടും; പാപിയോ അവളാൽ പിടിപെടും.

Behold, this have I found, says the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:കാര്യം അറിയേണ്ടതിന്നു ഒന്നോടൊന്നു ചേർത്തു പരിശോധിച്ചുനോക്കീട്ടു ഞാൻ ഇതാകുന്നു കണ്ടതു എന്നു സഭാ പ്രസംഗി പറയുന്നു:

Which yet my soul seeks, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.ഞാൻ താല്പര്യമായി അന്വേഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിലും കണ്ടുകിട്ടാത്തതു: ആയിരംപേരിൽ ഒരു പുരുഷനെ ഞാൻ കണ്ടെത്തി എങ്കിലും ഇത്രയും പേരിൽ ഒരു സ്ത്രീയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയില്ല എന്നതത്രേ.

Lo, this only have I found, that God has made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.ഒരു കാര്യം മാത്രം ഞാൻ കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു: ദൈവം മനുഷ്യനെ നേരുള്ളവനായി സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു; അവരോ അനേകം സൂത്രങ്ങളെ അന്വേഷിച്ചുവരുന്നു.

Ecclesiastes 8

Who is as the wise man? and who knows the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom makes his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.ജ്ഞാനിക്കു തുല്യനായിട്ടു ആരുള്ളു? കാര്യത്തിന്റെ പൊരുൾ അറിയുന്നവർ ആർ? മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജ്ഞാനം അവന്റെ മുഖത്തെ പ്രകാശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു; അവന്റെ മുഖത്തെ കാഠിന്യം മാറിപ്പോകുന്നു.

I counsel you to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.ദൈവസന്നിധിയിൽ ചെയ്ത സത്യം ഓർത്തിട്ടു രാജാവിന്റെ കല്പന പ്രമാണിച്ചുകൊള്ളേണം എന്നു ഞാൻ പ്രബോധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he does whatsoever pleases him.നീ അവന്റെ സന്നിധി വിട്ടുപോകുവാൻ ബദ്ധപ്പെടരുതു; ഒരു ദുഷ്കാര്യത്തിലും ഇടപെടരുതു; അവൻ തനിക്കു ഇഷ്ടമുള്ളതൊക്കെയും ചെയ്യുമല്ലോ.

Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What do you?രാജകല്പന ബലമുള്ളതു; നീ എന്തു ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നു അവനോടു ആർ ചോദിക്കും?

Whoso keeps the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerns both time and judgment.കല്പന പ്രമാണിക്കുന്നവന്നു ഒരു ദോഷവും സംഭവിക്കയില്ല; ജ്ഞാനിയുടെ ഹൃദയം കാലത്തെയും ന്യായത്തെയും വിവേചിക്കുന്നു.

Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.സകല കാര്യത്തിന്നും കാലവും ന്യായവും ഉണ്ടല്ലോ; മനുഷ്യന്റെ അരിഷ്ടത അവന്നു ഭാരമായിരിക്കുന്നു.

For he knows not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?സംഭവിപ്പാനിരിക്കുന്നതു അവൻ അറിയുന്നില്ലല്ലോ; അതു എങ്ങനെ സംഭവിക്കും എന്നു അവനോടു ആർ അറിയിക്കും?

There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.ആത്മാവിനെ തടുപ്പാൻ ആത്മാവിന്മേൽ അധികാരമുള്ള ഒരു മനുഷ്യനുമില്ല; മരണ ദിവസത്തിന്മേൽ അധികാരമുള്ളവനുമില്ല; യുദ്ധത്തിൽ സേവാവിമോചനവുമില്ല; ദുഷ്ടത ദുഷ്ടന്മാരെ വിടുവിക്കയുമില്ല.

All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man rules over another to his own hurt.ഇതൊക്കെയും ഞാൻ കണ്ടു; മനുഷ്യന്നു മനുഷ്യന്റെ മേൽ അവന്റെ ദോഷത്തിന്നായി അധികാരമുള്ള കാലത്തു സൂര്യന്നു കീഴെ നടക്കുന്ന സകലപ്രവൃത്തിയിലും ഞാൻ ദൃഷ്ടിവെച്ചു ദുഷ്ടന്മാർ അടക്കം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു വിശ്രാമം പ്രാപിക്കുന്നതും

And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.നേർ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചവർ വിശുദ്ധസ്ഥലം വിട്ടുപോകേണ്ടിവരികയും പട്ടണത്തിൽ മറക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നതും ഞാൻ കണ്ടു; അതും മായ അത്രേ.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.ദുഷ്‌പ്രവൃത്തിക്കുള്ള ശിക്ഷാവിധി തൽക്ഷണം നടക്കായ്കകൊണ്ടു മനുഷ്യർ ദോഷം ചെയ്‍വാൻ ധൈര്യപ്പെടുന്നു.

Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:പാപി നൂറു പ്രാവശ്യം ദോഷം ചെയ്കയും ദീർഘായുസ്സോടെ ഇരിക്കയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ദൈവത്തെ ഭയപ്പെടുന്ന ഭക്തന്മാർക്കു നന്മ വരുമെന്നു ഞാൻ നിശ്ചയമായി അറിയുന്നു.

But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he fears not before God.എന്നാൽ ദുഷ്ടന്നു നന്മ വരികയില്ല; അവൻ ദൈവത്തെ ഭയപ്പെടായ്കയാൽ നിഴൽപോലെ അവന്റെ ആയുസ്സു ദീർഘമാകയില്ല.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.ഭൂമിയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഒരുമായ ഉണ്ടു: നീതിമാന്മാർക്കു ദുഷ്ടന്മാരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തിക്കു യോഗ്യമായതു ഭവിക്കുന്നു; ദുഷ്ടന്മാർക്കു നീതിമാന്മാരുടെ പ്രവൃത്തിക്കു യോഗ്യമായതും ഭവിക്കുന്നു; അതും മായ അത്രേ എന്നു ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു.

Then I commended delight, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun.ആകയാൽ ഞാൻ സന്തോഷത്തെ പ്രശംസിച്ചു; തിന്നു കുടിച്ചു സന്തോഷിക്കുന്നതല്ലാതെ മനുഷ്യന്നു സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴിൽ മറ്റൊരു നന്മയുമില്ലല്ലോ; ദൈവം സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴിൽ അവന്നു നല്കുന്ന ആയുഷ്കാലത്തു അവന്റെ പ്രയത്നത്തിൽ അവനോടുകൂടെ നിലനില്ക്കുന്നതു ഇതുമാത്രമേയുള്ളു.

When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes:)ഭൂമിയിൽ നടക്കുന്ന കാര്യം കാണ്മാനും -- മനുഷ്യന്നു രാവും പകലും കണ്ണിൽ ഉറക്കം വരുന്നില്ലല്ലോ -- ജ്ഞാനം ഗ്രഹിപ്പാനും ഞാൻ മനസ്സുവെച്ചപ്പോൾ

Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.സൂര്യന്റെ കീഴിൽ നടക്കുന്ന പ്രവൃത്തി ആരാഞ്ഞറിവാൻ മനുഷ്യന്നു കഴിവില്ല എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഞാൻ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സകല പ്രവൃത്തിയെയും കണ്ടു; മനുഷ്യൻ എത്ര പ്രയാസപ്പെട്ടു അന്വേഷിച്ചാലും അതിനെ ഗ്രഹിക്കയില്ല; ഒരു ജ്ഞാനി തന്നേയും അതിനെ ഗ്രഹിപ്പാൻ നിരൂപിച്ചാൽ അവന്നു സാധിക്കയില്ല.
